Outer Banks Tri Villages
Outer Banks Vacation Rentals
If an Outer Banks vacation rental is in the cards for your family consider the "trio" of villages on Hatteras Island. Namely, Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo.

Outer Banks Vacation Salvo
We are starting with Salvo, it is the third village in the trio. Home to the Outer Banks fishermen, you will see crab pots and fish boxes near the shore. Villages in this obx area became established here due to the proximity to Chicamacomico Banks, a lucrative fishing area. Chicamacomico Banks extended from Oregon Inlet to Kinnakeet (present-day Avon). By the early 1900’s, three distinct villages had become established on the northern end of the island, now know as the Tri-Villages area. The southernmost of these three villages was know as Clark, or Clarksville. In 1901, Clarksville got its own post office and was renamed Salvo. The Outer Banks appeals to vacationers because you have the more commercialized vacation area in the north part of the obx. The south, and particularly Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo offer a more secluded vacation destination. Home to wind surfers and fishermen, Salvo is a very relaxing vacation spot with sandy beaches, rolling dunes, abundant wildlife, with crashing waves on the eastern side and deeper waters on the other.

Outer Banks Vacation Waves
Waves, the second village of the trio is just below Oregon Inlet and The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, a great bird watching area. As with a lot of isolated communities that have to survive in sometimes harsh conditions, each of the three villages retains its own distinct character. By the 1930’s, this village was known as South Rodanthe. South Rodanthe had a name change to Waves in 1939. Because of the size of the island at this particular point it does not matter which side you plan finalize your Outer Banks vacation rental, you seem to be surrounded by beautiful blue ocean waters. The beaches here are public as they are in the National Park Service. Waves wakes up in the summer with visitors enjoying Waterfall Park, campgrounds and of course the great Outer Banks restaurants. Waves is home to kiteboarding and surfing, where everything you need for these sports can be found, including a Lesson Center. Waves is well worth checking out.

Outer Banks Vacation Rodanthe
The third and northern most village in the Outer Banks tri villages area is Rodanthe. Rodanthe includes the original Chicamacomico (what the obx trio was originally called) Life-Saving Station, which is now a museum and is the eastern most point in North Carolina. While there are no hotels here there are numerous vacation rental homes and great campsites. If camping is the focus of your Outer Banks vacation this is the spot. A couple of good campgrounds are; the family run Rodanthe Watersports and Shoreline Campground and the Cape Hatteras KOA Campground, both seem to have good online reviews. Rodanthe has the most action (if you can call it that) of the three communities, with the most vacation rentals and commercial enterprises. While there, visit Hatteras Island Fishing Pier, the 850 foot pier is a beach vacation landmark and has withstood many storms and hurricanes. There is a tackle shop in the pier house that has everything you will need to enjoy this special vacation fishing spot.
